The Friends of High School Park is a non-profit volunteer organization whose mission is to create, manage and preserve a viable 11+ acre native ecosystem in High School Park for the enjoyment of the community, in cooperation with Cheltenham Township. We are dedicated to inspiring the community to connect with others and the natural environment through service and learning connected with the park.
FHSP has transformed this once-neglected site of the former high school into an award-winning place of natural beauty. Since 1995, we have dug in hundreds of native plants, and ensured their survival by digging out invasive weeds.
A 10 Year Ecological Management Plan has been created to guide the organization as it continues to enhance this green space. Knowledgeable staff and volunteers of all ages are preserving it for the future.
Located on the corner of Montgomery Ave and High School Rd in Elkins Park, this green space is just a short walk from the train station, and offers a place to relax, unwind, or talk a leisurely walk with your dogs or family members. It is devoted to restoring the native plant communities once found here. FHSP has worked hard to enhance the native ecology of the park. Additionally, the park serves as a valuable educational resource to local schools and a gathering point for the community.

Our Relationship with Cheltenham Township
The restoration and stewardship of High School Park is done in cooperation with Cheltenham Township. Township officials and staff have been supportive of our native plant restoration efforts and have worked with FHSP to acquire state and county funding for some of our endeavors, including the development of the restoration plan. Township workers are responsible for such maintenance tasks at the park as mowing, delivering woodchips, and picking up the trash. But by mobilizing the community, FHSP provides much of the direction, funding, and people power needed to make High School Park a unique natural refuge in Cheltenham Township.
FHSP depends on its members and volunteers to support the restoration and stewardship of High School Park. Become a member and receive e-mails and newsletters about the park and our programs.
